Tau garçó, la durundena
Catalan carol from "La Trulla", an "ensalada" by Bartomeu Càrceres, mid 16th century, arranged Katy Lavinia Cooper.
Little is known for certain of Càrceres except that in 1546 he was on the payroll of the Duke of Calabria as a music copyist, though he was clearly more than that. His name appears by several pieces in the Cançoner de Gandía (Gandía songbook) and some anonymous mmaterial in the Uppsala Songbook is attributed to him. He was probably of Valencian origin but in this piece mixes up Spanish, Catalan and Gascon language elements, as befits a piece published in an "enalada" (miscellany) called La Trulla ("Commotion").

LYRICS
Tau garçó, la durundena Tau Jesú, la durundó E tau hillot, la durundó Tan chiquet e tan polit Com t'és nat aquesta nit, Lucifer serà scarnit, Tot l'infern n'aurà gran pena. Los angeus n'an gran plausir, Vent complit nostre deusir, Que l'alt cel s'a de fornir De gascons per bella strena. E sonaven tots acors Ab rebequins e manacors Y ab veus autes grans e forts Dansaven l'hauta serena. Tots ensemps li fan la xiera, En esta nit plazentiera Davan la Vergen partiera Que trau lo món de cadena. |
APPROXIMATE TRANSLATION
(not to be taken as gospel!) Your son (nonsense syllables),Your Jesus,Your boy So small and sweet, born to you this night. Lucifer will be confounded and all of Hell will suffer. The angels rejoice to see our wish fulfilled The heavens will provide gifts for such a happy event. And everyone played together on the rebec and monocord Sang with loud voices and danced an elegant "alta". Let everyone celebrate together on this happy (or peaceful) night Before the Virgin who has freed the world from its chains. |
